Kansas based singer, songwriter and looping artist Kawehi is a self-made superstar on the rise. Since she uploaded her first video to YouTube some four years ago much has happened.
Creativity, technology and interactivity. These three concepts are integral to understanding Kawehi’s success. Since 2012 the now 32 year old looping talent has released no less than two EPs and three albums. Each of them display the native Hawaiian’s colossal creative capacity and her ability to totally deconstruct a song and rebuild it from the ground up.
Back in 2012 Kawehi made an all-vocal cover of “The Way You Make Me Feel” using just a phrase looper. This should turn out to become her major breakthrough (at the moment of writing, it has got close to 4,000,000 views).
Since then her technological arsenal has expanded vastly. Apart from incorporating several instruments (keyboard, guitar, ukulele and more) she has integrated a VoiceLive Touch 2 into her setup (really can’t stress that enough) – and lately Ableton Live.
Now, what did we mean with interactivity being integral to her success? Well, Kawehi has really mastered the art of crowdfunding.
Several of her projects were funded using Kickstarter. Her latest project called “Robot Heart” was backed by more than 400 people that pledged just short of $30,000!What’s even more impressing is the fact that 80 percent of her backers return for each of her projects.
Look at us rambling on. You didn't come here to read a bunch of text - you came to watch some cool videos, didn’t you?
